- There are several ways to connect to the internet.

- Large companies choose Local Area Network (LAN) Dialup.

- Small organizations with personal computers use dialup up access and terminal emulation.

There are different ways your personal computer can connect to the internet, the following are the options ;

i) Dumb Terminal
ii) Terminal Emulation
iii) Direct Connection
iv) SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol)
v) PPP (Point-tot-point protocol)
vi) ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network)
vii) Cabel Modem
viii) Network Computer
ix) Web TV
x) Online Services

Dumb Terminals

It means a terminal connected to a mainframe computer to access the internet. This kind of connections can often be in libraries and Universities.

Terminal Emulation

- A computer can connect to a mainframe computer or supercomputer via Terminal Emulation (Command Based) using a modem.

- this kind of access you can't able to use the graphical part of the internet such as "www".

Direct Connections

- For this connectivity network devices HUB and SWITCH can be Used.

- When a LAN is connected to the internet, all the computers on the network can have full access to the internet.

- This kind of access is common inside the corporations.

SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol)

- SLIP is a full internet connection over telephone lines using a modem.

- Using this connection you can send your data packets up to 96.00 bit per second.

- SLIP can provide TCP/IP host with dial-up access to the internet by using SLIP servers allotted at Internet service provides (ISP).

PPP(Point-to-Point Protocol)

- Like SLIP this is also full internet connection that also used telephones lines using the modem.

- It is more reliable because it is double-checked to make sure that internet packets arrive accurately. This protocol resends any damage packets.

- PPP is a data link layer protocol for wide area networks (WAN).

ISDN(Integrated Services Digital Network)

- It is a newer Technology Over SLIP or PPP that usually dial into the internet at very high speed (64 kbps to 128 kbps).

- Special ISDN modems must be used with ISDN lines.

- ISDN lines cost more than normal phone lines, so your telephone rates are usually higher.

- Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), allows for very high-speed connections over existing telephone wires.

Cable Modem

- The internet can be accessed over some cable TV systems using the co-axial cable that carries television signals.

- A special cable modem must be used.

- Cable modems may be able to send and receive data at speeds from 20 to 100 times as fast as conventional modems.

WEB TV

- You can also access the internet directly on your television set by using a set-top box that dials into the internet and then displays web pages on your television set.

- The best known of these is the WebTV set-top box and network.

Network Computer

- Some corporations use multiuser computers using special network operating systems.

- This will be low-cost internet connectivity that uses an internet connection and share internet connection among connected computers.

Internet ISP's

- Internet connection are provided by internet service provides (ISP). Connections Issued through the servers, allowed to connected users.

- You can subscribe internet account with any of the following ISP's

i) VSNL
ii) MTNL
iii) SATYAM COMMUNICATION
iv) NET CRACKERS
v) TATA INDICOM
vi) AIRTEL

Levels of Connectivities

Level 1 Connectivity

Level 1 connectivity is accessed through a gateway.

Level 2 Connectivity

Level 2 connectivity is accessed via modem to host connected to the network.

- Services are limited to what the connected host (H2) provides.

- Everything accomplished through H2

- File transfers from the internet to H1 require two downloads;
  a) Internet to H2
  b) H2 to H1

- Level 2 Connectivity is the most common of internet access.

  Level 3 Connectivity

Some local companies also provide Serial Line Interface Protocol (SLIP) or Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) Internet access.
